Ferrari Smashes into Dance Studio

On Tuesday night, a 93-year-old New Fairfield woman was driving her car to a ballroom dance class when she jumped the curb and slammed into the brick exterior wall of the studio.

After driving into the brick wall with such force that her front license plate remained lodged in the hole, Ferrari apparently overcompensated in reverse gear, traveling backwards in a circular motion.

The back end of her car then struck a van as her car continued to circle backwards until it smashed into a recess in the building filled with garbage containers.

The accident happened in the parking lot next to the rear entrance of the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, 345 Main Street shortly after 7 p.m. Following the crash, the driver, Thelma Ferrari, told an eyewitness that she was not in pain, and appeared dazed but otherwise alert as she spoke with paramedics. In the parking lot, stunned bystanders tried to fathom what had happened.

Dance instructors said Ferrari is a well-liked regular at the studio as well as being a great dancer.

Electrical Safety in Your Home

Electrical problem in the home can lead to house fires or electrocution, both of which can be fatal. There are some simple guidelines to ensure that accidents can be kept to a minimum.

Firstly don’t keep any electrical appliances which are damaged such as frayed cords, cracked housings or broken plugs. Replace or repair them or throw them away. Before you plug or unplug any appliances, turn off the power points and turn them all off when going to bed or when leaving home, including air conditioners, heaters and ovens or stove tops.

All appliances should have sufficient air circulating to ensure they do not overheat and exhaust fans should be kept clean and dust free. Any inflammable material should not be stored or kept near stoves, heaters or lamps or any other electrical appliance which generates heat.

Never use electrical appliance is areas where there is water, unless it is specially designed for that purpose and always use a licensed electrician to carry out all your electrical work and repairs.

How to Prevent a Vehicle Fire

Vehicle fires can be very dangerous however there are some steps you can take to minimize your risk of vehicle fire.

Firstly you should drive safely and looked out for potential fire hazards such as downed power lines and try not to drive in electrical storms.

You should always have a fire extinguisher handy in your vehicle, not hidden away where it is hard to access. Ensure that it is especially for vehicle fires as it might be different from the one you have in your home.

Check that the inside of your vehicle is not full of paper trash and other debris which could cause a fire if someone drops a match onto it, or a spark from an electrical fault, and if a fire does start, a mass of paper and clutter will help it to spread.

Do not have flammables in your vehicle such as containers of gasoline or paraffin.

Make sure that if you install a new stereo system or other electronic devices that they are installed correctly as many fires are due to poor wiring.  Ensure that a qualified mechanic checks the vehicle wiring on a regular basis.

You should also ensure the fuel line, fuel injectors and gas tank are not leaking, more often the case in older vehicles.

And finally, check the battery is in good condition.

Just carrying out these few sensible precautions should greatly reduce the change of a vehicle fire.

Dangers for Elderly Pedestrians

According to a new analysis of federal highway accident data, released this week, pedestrians older than 60 in Danbury and the rest of Fairfield County face more than three times the risk of being struck and killed by cars as younger state residents.

The analysis was based on National Highway Traffic Administration figures and was conducted by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. It discovered that 31 out of the 75 pedestrian deaths in 14 cities and towns in Fairfield County from 2003 to 2012 were people over the age of 60. This figure compares with the fact that only 18.2 percent of the county’s population is residents 60 or older.

According to the report, Danbury had four pedestrian fatalities from 2003 to 2012, including a Western Connecticut State University student, Dong Lin, killed in a hit-and-run accident on White Street and Newtown had one pedestrian fatality during the same time frame.

On Friday, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said pedestrian safety, especially among the city’s elderly population, is something his administration takes seriously.

Teen Killed in Boating Accident

On Wednesday a 16-year-old Old Greenwich girl, Emily Fedorka died in a boating accident.

Police Chief James Heavey said that she was water tubing off Greenwich Point when she fell off the tube and was run over by a boat.

He said that the boat driver made a turn to pick up the tubers but the boat collided with the two girls in the water and they became entangled in the propeller.

Both the boat operator and passengers helped the victims by lifting them into the boat and taking them straight to Old Greenwich Yacht Club dock the Greenwich Point Park. The second girl in the water suffered serious cuts to her leg and is in stable condition at Stamford Hospital.

There were no adults on the boat, and the driver was 16 years old but Heavey said that in the state of Connecticut the minimum age to operate a boat is 16, as long as they have passed a safe boating course.

Heavey did not say who owned the boat or whether Fedorko and the other teen who was in the water were wearing life jackets.

The accident is being investigated by the Greenwich Police Department Marine Section and Lt. John Brown of the department said there have been three boating-related deaths in the last decade in Greenwich.

Father Forgot Child in Car

A 15-month-old child died on Monday, after his father left him all day in a car, on one of the hottest days so far this year.

Ridgefield Police Capt. Jeff Kreitz said the child, Benjamin Seitz, was in the back seat of the car. His father, Kyle Seitz would usually drop him off at his day care center in Ridgefield, before going to buy his coffee and then go to work in Grove Street.

For some reason he did not drop Benjamin off, but went for his coffee and then to work. Apparently, sources say that he went back to his car at lunchtime and went for lunch.

However, when he finally finished work at the end of the day he realized that Benjamin was still in the car, and drove him directly to Danbury hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ridgefield police were called by the hospital but they have not yet said what charges, if any, will be faced.

This is the third recent incident where children have been left in vehicles, although neither of the other cases was fatal. One was in Orange and one in New London, and both parents were charged with risk of injury to a minor.

Drivers Continue to Use Cell Phones

In Connecticut, 2012 accident data shows that distracted driving was a contributing factor for drivers in fatal accidents in 3.6 percent of crashes. The most common factors were speed, alcohol, drugs and medication.

Connecticut law states that it is illegal to use a hand held cell phone whilst driving and is also illegal to text even when the vehicle is stationary.

The police have been cracking down on drivers and one in 77 drivers in Connecticut in 2013 was given a ticket for a cell phone offence. In total 32,000 tickets were issued which delivered more than $2 million in fines to the state.

The fines are currently $150 for a first offense and $500 for multiple offenses.

However, the level of the fines is not preventing people using their phones, as according to the National Occupant Protection Use Survey, over 600,000 drivers across the country are using their cell phones at any point during the day.

Aaron Swanson, of the Connecticut Department of Transportation. said that driving using a cell phone has been a consistent factor resulting in crashes, injuries and fatalities. It is across all age groups and demographics although it does tend to be higher among female drivers than male. It seems that the public has yet to be fully convinced of the dangers involved with distracted driving.

GM victims to Receive Substantial Pay Outs

GM Compensation

Lawyer Kenneth Feinberg has been appointed as the administrator for the GM faulty switch compensation fund, and has now met with the families to go over the details of the scheme.

Feinberg said that meeting the families has been the hardest part of his job, having to face those who lost loved ones due to accidents caused by the switch, and meeting those with permanent injuries such as brain damage or paraplegics.

He said that whilst he can hand over the compensation, naturally he cannot bring back those who died nor can he cure the disabilities suffered by those who were injured in the car accidents. The money will assist them but it cannot take away from their suffering.

However, he could confirm that he is totally in charge of the process and the amounts, and the latter will be based on predicted potential future earnings of the victims plus an amount for pain and suffering. GM will not be able to appeal the awards he recommends and nor can they put any cap on the amounts.

If you or a loved one was injured or killed as a result of a defective GM vehicle,  you may be entitled to monetary compensation for the pain, suffering, and debilitating injuries which resulted from your accident.
